Camp Mariposa: Helping Children Heal from the Impact of SUD

When people think about substance use disorder, they often think about the person struggling with addiction. What is talked about far less are the children quietly carrying the weight of that struggle.

Across our communities, thousands of children are growing up in homes impacted by substance use. They may experience fear, uncertainty, grief, isolation, or responsibilities far beyond their years. Many carry feelings they don't fully understand and burdens they were never meant to bear.

That is why Camp Mariposa exists.

Camp Mariposa is a free, year-round addiction prevention and mentoring program for youth ages 9–17 who have been affected by the substance use of a family member. Through a unique blend of traditional camp activities, peer support, education, and mentoring, young people are given something many have never experienced before: a safe place where they can simply be kids.

More Than Just a Camp

At first glance, Camp Mariposa looks like a fun weekend camp filled with outdoor activities, games, laughter, and friendship. But beneath those experiences is something even more powerful.

Campers learn healthy coping skills, build resilience, strengthen self-esteem, and develop life skills that can help break generational cycles of substance use disorder. They discover that they are not alone and that what is happening around them is not their fault.

Many youth impacted by addiction carry feelings of shame and isolation. Camp Mariposa creates a community where children can connect with peers who truly understand what they are going through. For many campers, it is the first time they realize there are others with stories similar to their own.

The Meaning Behind the Butterfly

"Mariposa" is the Spanish word for butterfly—a symbol of transformation, growth, and hope.

The butterfly perfectly represents the journey many of these young people are taking. While they cannot control the choices of the adults around them, they can learn that their future is not defined by their circumstances. They can grow stronger, discover their own potential, and create a different path forward.

Why Early Support Matters

Research has shown that children impacted by substance use in the family face increased emotional and behavioral challenges. Without support, many carry those struggles into adulthood.
